Fight back against heart-guyenBERRY CASTLE for the world’s biggest prescription drugmaker, one of the most feared markets.
A study found that prescription medicines like Celebrex and Pfizer’s over-the-counter-prescription drug Lipitor doubled the rate of heart attacks and strokes in the United States.
“This is a dangerous development,” said Dr. David Kaminetsky, a cardiovascular medicine researcher at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Kaminetsky and other study participants were randomly assigned to take an over-the-counter drug to control for cardiovascular risk factors or to receive a prescription drug.
Celebrex, a drug used to treat pain and inflammation, doubled the rate of heart attacks and strokes in the study, compared to a control group of 18,977 who took an identical-to-new drug.
According to a study published last year in the New England Journal of Medicine, the combination of two drugs was associated with a 2-fold increase in the risk of fatal coronary events. The combination of Celebrex and Lipitor, or Coxib, is the first approved over-the-counter or prescription drug to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Celebrex was the second over-the-counter drug to be pulled from the market in the United States after a study showed that it doubled the risk of heart attack and stroke. Pfizer Inc. is not giving its Coxib to those at risk.
Celebrex is not available in the United States because it is associated with a lower rate of heart attacks and strokes. But with so many heart patients at risk, it may be time to consider a new drug to treat the condition.
If you are one of the many heart patients who have taken Celebrex and have suffered a heart attack or stroke in the past month, your doctor may recommend a different drug to treat the condition.
Celebrex is a prescription-only drug, and the drug’s label states it is not for use by anyone under the age of 18.
Doctors may also prescribe prescription-strength Celebrex, or a stronger version of Celebrex, for the treatment of arthritis and other painful conditions, said Dr. Charles B. Johnson, a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and director of the Division of Cardiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Doctors also prescribe a prescription-strength Celebrex that’s not for use by anyone under the age of 18.
If you’re considering Celebrex to treat your condition, ask your doctor about other medications and therapies that you’re taking. This helps to prevent the drug from interacting with your body.
Doctors may prescribe a prescription-strength Celebrex when it’s not for use by anyone under the age of 18, according to a study published last year in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study involved more than 2,000 patients in 42 countries and involved about 800,000 patients who received either a prescription-strength of Celebrex or a placebo.
